In this fast paced world we are bombarded with information, to-do lists, next steps, self help, how to’s, who to follow, the next fashion trend and all the pretty lights.
During my time in the Word this week I had a fresh revelation, very fundamental almost basic Christianity 101, yet very critical. These days the trend is to push the limits, to dare to challenge the status quo, to do our own thing, to choose our destiny. While I am all for adventure, newness and taking mighty leaps of Faith, I do think “we”, as Americans anyways, tend to push the envelope in the opposite direction at times, and it could be and is, fatal, all to often.
Let me explain.
In Joshua, the well known account of Rahab the prostitute is told in chapter two. While most times we hear about how God can use anyone even a prostitute or her faith is what saved her (which both are very true) when we study Rahab, I’d submit to you another thought and eye-opener through her story.
As a quick recap, Rahab lived in the wall of Jericho, her and her family, and when Joshua sent two spies to survey the land before the army was to overtake, Rahab took them in, she hid them from the king and helped them get away. Get away not only alive and unfound, but with the information of the land they needed, and sent them on the perfect way home, so to not be caught by the search party sent out for them by the King.
Rahab was no dummy, she struck up a deal with these guys, that because she hid them, and as long as she didn’t give away any of their information to the king or people of Jericho, her and her family would be saved when Israel came to demolish the town and it’s people.
In the midst of starting a siege, how would the Israelites know who and where Rahab and her family were? In the midst of a war, I’m sure that could slip their minds rather easily, so they simply instructed her
“Behold, when we come into the land, you shall tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and you shall gather into your house your father and mother, brothers, and all your father’s household.” (Joshua 2:18)
They told her exactly what to do to be saved, simple as that, put the scarlet cord in the window, and you will not perish. Note that they told her to do so when they (the Israelites) came into the land, but if you notice and read on, she didn’t wait for them to come back, she did so immediately.
‘And she said, “According to your words, so be it.” Then she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord to the window.’ (Joshua 2:21)
She tied the cord on the window right away, even though the two guys had at least a three days journey back to Israel. Not to mention the time it would take the entire army to prepare and deploy. It would be at least a week, and probably more, for them to get back. She could have waited, she could have procrastinated, she could have gone on about her business and put the cord out the window the next week, but she didn’t. She lowered the men, and put the cord on the window instantly. She knew her life was on the line, she knew exactly what she needed to do, and did so immediately, no hesitation, no fuss about it, just put the scarlet cord on the window. We can learn a lot from Rahab, her obedience and timing, her simple, immediate act of faith, that as you read on, saved her and her family’s lives. (Joshua ch.6)
There are churches around the world, and it’s sadly rampant in America, that have people sitting in the seats each Sunday, and have yet to put their cord out. Have not accepted the blood sacrifice of Jesus, and surrendered to Him. “I’m waiting for the right time” they say, or “I’m not quite there yet”, or a multitude of excuses, which the devil is not in any lack of, and is happy to supply you with on a moments notice. Now I’m not condemning anyone here, and I realize we’re all on our own journey with the Lord. But what I am, is hopeful. Hopeful that this revelation will reach many who are on the fence, with one foot in the world, and one foot in the Kingdom.
It does not take a second look to realize the world is seemingly crumbling, and I’m not surprised or worried, not one bit. Jesus tells us about this in Matthew 24 when His disciples ask when the end will be, when He will be coming back.
Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains. “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. (Matthew 24:4-14)
Have you put your cord out, which is to call upon the name of the Jesus Christ, to trust, believe and put your full faith in Him. To take that foot that is on the ‘world’ side of the fence and stand firm in the Kingdom places. Reread the above passage from Matthew, many of those things have and are happening right now, there is no guarantee of tomorrow, absolutely none. Just like the guys from the Israel army told Rahab exactly what to do to be saved, the Word tells us too.
“..if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9)
If you’ve been on the fence, needing, wanting, waiting to give all to Him, surrender, trust and be saved, now is the time. Today is the day. Below is a prayer that you can pray exactly where you are. If you say this prayer, if you put out your cord, I don’t care if you’re in my back yard, states away or on a different continent, please reach out, send me an email on my connect sheet. I’d love to hear from you, I’d love to talk with you on practical next steps for walking this amazingly beautiful life with Jesus.
All my Love,
Lord Jesus, today I choose to give you my life. I repent for standing on the fence, I repent for all I’ve done knowingly and unknowingly against You. I believe you died on the cross, and rose three days later from the grave. I receive Your blood sacrifice for all my sin. I ask You to cover me with Your blood, restore me, sanctify me and use me for the purposes You created me. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
